Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-LA), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight of the Committee on Ways and Means, today announced that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) and the 2013 tax return filing season.  The hearing will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Room 1100 of the Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 2:30 P.M.

The Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Steve Miller, will be the only witness at the hearing.  However, any individual or organization not scheduled for an oral appearance may submit a written statement for consideration by the Committee and for inclusion in the printed record of the hearing.

BACKGROUND:

In fiscal year 2012, the IRS collected over $2.5 trillion in taxes, processed 146.2 million individual tax returns, and issued $322.7 billion in refunds.  With the 2013 tax return filing season concluded, the Subcommittee will review IRS performance with a focus on taxpayer service, taxpayer rights, and refund administration.

In conjunction with the review of the current tax return filing season, the Subcommittee will review IRS operations in general.  Specifically, the Subcommittee will consider: (1) the recently reported delays in tax refunds, (2) fairness in examinations and tax administration, (3) efforts to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, including identity theft, and (4) how implementation of the President’s health care law is affecting the agency’s core mission.  As part of its consideration of IRS operations, the Subcommittee will also examine the Administration’s fiscal year 2014 budget proposal for the IRS.

In announcing the hearing, Chairman Boustany said, “Given the challenges and setbacks that have been reported regarding the 2013 tax filing season, the Subcommittee looks forward to hearing from Acting Commissioner Miller about the steps the IRS is taking to assist taxpayers in a timely and efficient manner.  The Subcommittee also has an obligation to ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent wisely, and the Subcommittee expects to learn more from the Commissioner about how the IRS intends to allocate its current set of resources to address longstanding problems like fraud, as well as how the IRS is preparing for its role in the implementation of the President’s health care law.”

FOCUS OF THE HEARING:

The hearing will focus on the 2013 tax return filing season, the IRS’ fiscal year 2014 budget request, and IRS operations generally.

FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS:
