Washington, DC – Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX) met with the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Inspector General (IG) Pat O’Carroll yesterday regarding his request for a full investigation of Social Security’s management and failure to prevent disability fraud conspiracies.  The request followed the arrests of over 200 individuals – including retired policemen and firefighters – indicted as a result of ongoing Social Security Disability Insurance fraud investigations in Puerto Rico and New York.  So far these schemes have cost taxpayers over $30 million.  

“Inspector General O’Carroll has promised a timely report on Social Security’s management of the disability program.  It’s past time Social Security made fraud prevention and the protection of hardworking taxpayer dollars a top priority, particularly at a time when Social Security won’t be able to pay full disability benefits in just two years.  Hardworking taxpayers and honest beneficiaries want, need and deserve Social Security’s full commitment to preventing fraud conspiracies.”
