Washington, D.C. - House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) announced that the Social Security Subcommittee will hold a field hearing on How the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset Mistreat Government Workers. The hearing will take place Monday, November 20, 2023, at the St. George Fire Department in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“Millions of retired public servants across the country receive unfair treatment because of outdated laws from Washington. The Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset are decades old rules that can unfairly reduce the Social Security benefits of the men and women who serve as our law enforcement officers, firefighters, teachers, and public workers that our communities depend on each day. In most cases, employees are not aware that their benefits will be reduced until after they or their spouse retire. The Ways and Means Committee looks forward to visiting Louisiana and hearing directly from Americans affected by these challenges so we can provide fair and meaningful relief for public servants harmed by these laws," said Chairman Smith.
