Washington, D.C. - Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) today released the following statement as he announced subcommittee chair assignments for the 118th Congress:
“The Ways and Means subcommittee chairs are among the best and brightest in Congress. Each of them brings unique talents and qualifications that make them well suited to help guide the important work that lays before this committee.
“The Subcommittee on Health under Chairman Buchanan will examine how we can expand access to more affordable health care options for Americans, protect and preserve the Medicare program for today’s seniors and tomorrow’s retirees, and fight against the Biden Administration’s dangerous attacks on innovation, new cures, and treatments.
“On the Subcommittee on Tax, Chairman Kelly will renew Congress’s focus on tax relief for families and small businesses, examine what new incentives and policies will help more Americans succeed and restore American energy independence, all while standing up to President Biden’s punishing tax hikes on workers and job creators.
“With trade vital to the health of America’s economy, the Subcommittee on Trade led by Chairman Smith will put American farmers and manufacturers first by prioritizing opening up global markets to sell their products, secure and re-shore strategic supply chains, and push back on the Biden Administration’s partisan trade moratorium that’s surrendered America’s trade leadership to China.
“With too many Americans still on the sidelines of today’s economy, the Subcommittee on Work and Welfare led by Chairman LaHood will strengthen the American workforce and support families by making careers more valuable than government checks, stopping the theft of American tax dollars by international fraud rings, and examine how federal assistance programs can help get more able-bodied Americans back into the workforce.
“Our Subcommittee on Oversight under Chairman Schweikert will be at the forefront of an aggressive oversight effort focused on utilization of and compliance with America’s tax code as well as protecting families and small businesses from the supercharged IRS’s army of 87,000 auditors, holding the IRS accountable for its abysmal track record of customer service and misused funding, and investigating the long history of the agency’s political leaking of taxpayer information.
“American workers deserve a secure retirement, and the Subcommittee on Social Security led by Chairman Ferguson will continue to first and foremost protect and preserve that vital program for America’s seniors while finding new ways to help individuals and families to plan and save for their futures.
“Already, the Ways and Means Committee is hard at work laying the foundation for a strong economy that gives American workers, farmers, and small businesses more opportunity to succeed. With the help of our new subcommittee chairs, we will continue to deliver on our commitment to the American people and secure a brighter future for our nation.”
